French Polynesia is very dangerous for tourists – Two Australian tourists savagely attacked in Papeete

Tahiti, March 23, 2024 – Two Australian tourists ended up at CHPF after being attacked by several people, including a minor, in Papeete, from Friday night to Saturday.

It was from Friday night to Saturday that two Australian tourists, both aged 56, were attacked by several people, including a minor, in the city center. After going out for dinner, the two quinquagenarians decided to walk back to their Airbnb accommodation, located not far from the restaurant.

Unfortunately, they were accosted and attacked near the Vaima taxi station, on the waterfront. “Normally there’s nothing to worry about because this area is well-lit (…) but the attackers followed them and attacked them from behind. They were beaten severely,” testified their host.

The tourists had to be transferred to the Taaone hospital center. “Their faces were covered in blood. One has broken ribs, teeth, and nose. The second was put on oxygen and still has chest pains,” said Poehere, who took care of them. “One of the tourists wears a hearing aid that costs 350,000 francs. The attackers simply broke his device. Now, he can’t hear anymore. It breaks my heart.”

The young woman said that the two tourists arrived in Fenua on Friday evening for their first visit. “One of them is a descendant of Christian Fletcher. What a shame! What a nightmare. This violence must stop,” lamented Poehere. “This gives a bad image of Polynesia. We feel guilty because we should have mentioned that it is not safe to walk, even if it is just a short distance to the city. You must take a taxi.” According to Poehere, other people were also attacked that same evening: “It is probably the same attackers,” she said.

The attackers were arrested and taken into custody. The minor was released. “He will be able to attack other people tonight,” said a family member who is accompanying the victims, dejectedly.

A complaint has been filed by the two victims.

AS IS USUALLY THE CASE IN THESE SITUATIONS, THE TRIAL TOOK PLACE AFTER THE TOURISTS HAD ALREADY LEFT, AND THE TWO ATTACKERS WERE GIVEN VERY LIGHT SENTENCES. THIS IS NORMAL HERE. THE POLICE AND THE JUSTICE SYSTEM COVER UP ALL THESE INCIDENTS TO MAKE IT SEEM LIKE WE ARE IN THE “POLYNESIAN PARADISE”.
